LPG Cylinder Safety Instruction

If there is a fire

Firstly, don't panic. Try to turn off the valve of the bottle using a damp cloth or towel to protect your hand. Then use the same wet towel to smother the flames. If you cannot reach the cylinder, move everything that could catch alight away from the bottle. Call the Fire Department and tell them that LP gas is involved.

People who use LPG commercially should take the following precautionary measures:

They should use LPG in accordance with the South African National Standards and the LPG Association norms and proper approvals and licences.

Only people who are trained as well as authorised for the tasks should be allowed to handle the LPG cylinders and equipment.

When the LPG cylinders are delivered, care should be taken to see that they are in proper condition and the plastic seals are in place before receiving them.

The cylinders should be stored in the safest possible manner. They should be kept away from any combustibles, heat and open electricity distribution boards.

Cylinders should not be used in horizontal or upside down positions.

All LPG equipment should undergo regular supervision, checks and maintenance.

Train employees on:

Sprinklers and fire suppression systems

Knowing where fire extinguishers are located and how to use them.

Fire extinguishers that must be checked monthly and serviced yearly.

Grease traps and clean regularly.

A cleaning schedule for cleaning all kitchen equipment.

The LPG supplier or distributor should always be contacted when you feel there are issues with regard to LPG cylinders or tanks. Even when you feel you need to examine the equipment and storage cylinders, you should rely on your supplier to deal with the issue and not depend on any third party. With simple measures like these, you can use LPG safely even in your commercial and industrial establishments.
